Are you an author?

Approaching the third decade of the XXI century, words such as “writing” or “publishing” should suggest a wider range of meanings.

By melting obsolete dichotomies between written-word vs spoken-word (turning them into a sort of continuum, a fluent craft), we contribute new possibilities beyond the traditional ‘circles of prestige’ in publishing.

There are many reasons why an author or publisher might consider audiobook versions of their works. On the business side, audiobooks boost both print book and ebook sales. Audiobooks never go out of print. Audiobooks increase presence and discoverability. Audiobooks expand an audience to include non-readers, struggling readers and second-language learners. Audiobooks increase accessibility and appeal to mobile users who listen while commuting, exercising or numerous other parallel activities.

On the artistic side, a 3D-audiobook offers entirely new dimensions of experience for the listener and creative input for the author. When the listener is immersed in a 3D sound space, proximity of the speaking voice and the acoustic qualities of the space become active elements and part of the creative toolkit for realising the emotional and cognitive impact of the work.

WHAT’S IN AN AUDIOBOOK?

Standard audiobooks released on major platforms (Audible, Scribd, Kobo, etc.) are produced:

  • for low-resolution streaming
  • with basic audio equipment
  • in mono mp3 format, 192kbps / 44.1kHz* i.e. CD-quality or less
  • not suitable for 3D audio which requires higher resolution
  • for flat, linear listening

*Audible’s ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange) states that: stereo is an option but mono is recommended;
“256kbps or 320kbps is possible to upload but the difference in quality heard by listeners will be negligible”

Producers deliver you a set of audio-files for upload to the major audiobook platforms. The rest is then up to you.

Authors typically commission these standard audiobooks of their works in 1 of 2 ways:

1. “Pay-for-production” or “pay per finished hour”

  • the author pays the producer a fixed rate per finished hour of audio: professional rates start above $200 USD per finished hour and rise into the thousands
  • the author receives royalties, the producer does not

2. Royalty Share

  • the producer invests all of the work up front to produce the audiobook at no cost to the author
  • the author and producer split the royalties

A third option is now emerging with a growing number of authors (& producers) taking a hybrid approach: paying a small fee upfront and splitting royalties after sales. This allows authors to attract professional producers while avoiding the higher upfront cost of production.

3D-audiobooks are different.

If you think of a standard audiobook as a nice and cheap, ‘paperback edition’ that you might pick up and read on a train… a 3D-audiobook, then, is more like your cloth-bound, ‘hardback edition’ – a digital object no less practical and portable but with a much richer functionality: audio-index, non-linear listening, playlists, additional expert content. Moreover, it is a book experience that you carve out time and space to explore, savour and treasure for many years to come.

Much of the 3D architecture and playlist features emerge from extensive text-mining and linguistic analysis that we carry out on the author’s work. Every book suggests its own unique architecture, its own non-linear pathways, its own semantic labyrinths.

tangiblemode’s 3D-audiobooks are comprised of:

  • high-resolution 3D audio enabling real ‘presence’ of the voice
  • coherent time architectures within each track, between tracks and as a whole
  • playlist functionality, allowing multiple ways of experiencing the text
(e.g. author’s voice-tracks only, semantically networked tracks, your own playlists, random-walk tracks)

We publish your 3D-audiobook as a mobile app in the ‘Books’ category, available for download in Google Play and App Stores worldwide.

As a result, production looks a little different. It includes:

1. PRE-PRODUCTION
  • research, linguistics analysis, text data-mining
  • text preparation
  • software development (cognitive linguistics)
2. PRODUCTION
  • specialised studio audio equipment and skillsets
  • direction of text reading / performance
3. POST-PRODUCTION
  • specialised audio software and skillsets (virtual acoustics)
  • virtual acoustics: construction of 3D space, sound trajectories (animation), sound design
  • software development (production tool development, app production)

TOWARDS DYNAMIC PUBLISHING:
fluid edition, including the audience

Expanding social tools for engagement with your audiobook, tangiblemode invests significantly in live events. These events invite audience members to become active readers in ‘mirroring’ the author’s core narration. Carefully choreographed, these recorded scenes are then injected back into the audiobook as extra layers in update/s to the app. The author’s narration is always preserved as the core of the audiobook.

Usually as a way of celebrating the initial launch of the audiobook, live events can also continue to evolve the work over time, as well as open opportunities for remote contribution and participation from active listeners.

AESTHETIC CONSIDERATIONS

Not all texts are equally suited to 3D-audiobook publishing. tangiblemode looks for works across a wide range of fields – works with limited narrative that imply or would benefit from non-linear listening experience, where 3D architecture and spatial cues activate memory in the listener. In certain cases, the 3D-audiobook edition can be perfectly aligned with pre-existing editions in print or e-format, functioning as an audible layer that enriches the possibilities of relating to a text.

Our focus is on smaller works –up to 10,000 words for poetry, up to 20,000 words for other fields– and we are open to works in English, Catalan, Spanish, French and Portuguese.

We are particularly interested in the author-as-reader of their own work. Here, we are after an intimately informed reading but not an enacted/dramatised one (i.e. by a voice-actor). Our analysis and preparation of your text for production is designed to produce the very best out of your voice (warming up) and your readings (variety of text length, sections or ‘takes’).

IN-PERSON OR REMOTELY SUPERVISED RECORDING

tangiblemode is based in Barcelona. The recording sessions themselves can generally be done in a weekend (or over two weekdays), subject to advance booking.

We also deal with remotely supervised recording if coming to Barcelona is not an option. We provide minimum technical requirements (from microphone choice to sample rate and bit depth) as well as guidance in finding the right recording studio near you and best methods for sending us the files. We design, prepare and send you a complete set-list of texts to record as separate tracks. During your audio production, we are on call to supervise, walk you through any problems, answer any questions as well as to give feedback and instructions between your recording sessions.

WORKING WITH US

Publishing a 3D-audiobook –a high-end object and experience– also requires somewhat higher levels of commitment especially during the production and launch phases. This connection between the author and production team pays off in the quality that the final product achieves. We are happy to adapt to experienced authors who would enjoy a more involved, ‘hands-on’ approach to building their audiobook as well as authors who prefer to be more ‘hands-off’.

3D-audiobook production:

FROM FIRST CONTACT TO AUDIOBOOK LAUNCH IN 6 STEPS

DEVELOPMENT TIMELINE

standard timeframe: 3 months

1. First contact

We receive your work as part of our OPEN CALL.

The work seems a good fit and well suited to publishing in 3D-audiobook format.

With a Work Schedule confirmed and signed Agreement in place, pre-production of your audiobook can begin.

2. Pre-production

As any publisher might, the tangiblemode team gets to know your work through deep, reflective reading and a good amount of discussion. Alongside this, your work is approached computationally through linguistics analysis and text data-mining. The combined results drive much of the 3D audio architecture and non-linear access in the audiobook. It also helps us prepare your text for the next step: Production.

For authors undertaking their recording remotely (i.e. not in Barcelona with tangiblemode), if needed, this is also the time where we can assist in finding a studio near you, providing minimum requirements and basic technical guidelines.

3. Production

With a focus on smaller works (up to 20,000 words for prose, up to 10,000 words for poetry), recording sessions can generally be done in a weekend (or over two weekdays if preferred).

Your text will have been prepared into a variety of sections or ‘takes’. We design for several things here: 1) little or no rehearsal, 2) to keep it interesting and fresh, 3) to treat your voice with care, 4) to inform your reading as you go, 5) to produce the specific audio materials needed.

For remote recording, we are on call to supervise, walk you through any problems, answer any questions as well as to give feedback and instructions between your recording sessions.

4. Post-production

This is the most complex phase of the whole process. It starts with editing and organising your raw sound files ready for use with 3D audio software. Then we work on the construction of the audio architecture of your book, including any other sound design elements. Similar to visual animation and the physics engines involved, 3D audio animation is a painstaking process and, perhaps, the most important and time-consuming part of the job.

Post-production also includes the audiobook app development –design, layout & functionality– as well as testing and ‘debugging’.

Towards the end of this post-production phase, we anticipate the promotion of your audiobook and begin event/s planning. We produce a dedicated webpage for presenting your audiobook preview and app release, a separate webpage for managing events and ticket sales, and other promotional materials.

5. Audiobook preview and pre-launch promotion

Your audiobook is in the hands of ‘real users’ – beta-testers who provide the final feedback prior to public launch. This is an opportunity to connect with your existing fan-base and include them at this early stage. This group is vital in the early propagation of your audience, providing a bottom-up, listener-driven network spread.

Event planning is also in full swing, confirming date/s and venue/s. We treat these launch events at the same artistic level as the audiobook, especially as they end up becoming part of it. They generally take the form of a kind of ‘concert of book-users’, adapted to different audience sizes and spaces.

6. App release and launch events

Launch day arrives and your audiobook is available for download (timing may vary between Google Play and App Stores).

We encourage positive, constructive early feedback as App Reviews, boosting online visibility.

The first launch event takes place, producing the first raw material for expanding your audiobook to include its audience. Attendees are invited to participate as both listeners and readers, mirroring the 3D architecture of the book while adding new semantic colour and future content possibilities.

App updates

Extra layers –germinated by audience members at launch events– are added to your audiobook.

Each layer is combined with fresh opportunities for promotion and audience expansion. Your audiobook will continue to grow and evolve over time.

HYBRID PUBLISHING: A PARTNERSHIP MODEL

tangiblemode joins a growing cast of publishers creating much-needed alternatives in the landscape of publishing. Occupying the space between traditional publishers and self-publishing, we partner with authors to pioneer new possibilites for high-end audio-literature.

Similar to traditional publishing houses, tangiblemode provides significant (audio)editorial and marketing assistance – we prepare, direct and produce your audio recordings and build the mobile app infrastructure for delivering multiple pathways through your audiobook. In terms of marketing, we invest in ongoing App Store Optimisation (App-preview, screenshots, icons, description), localised for different regions as well as listener-centred launch / tour events.

Unlike self-publishing platforms that publish whatever comes along regardless of quality, tangiblemode publishes a low frequency of highly select works that achieve both top literary quality and suggest an enjoyable audio time-architecture.

As an artistic project and close collaborative partnership, our authors absorb a small amount of the financial risk involved (approx. 1:10) in producing their audiobook in exchange for high royalties. As a partnership publisher, we combine a small upfront contribution from the author with royalty sharing post-sales.

Full details of this model can be found in the tangiblemode 3D-Audiobook Publishing Agreement.

FUNDING

We are happy to assist in any fundraising activities you might want to undertake pre-launch or post-launch, be it grant applications or a crowdfunding campaign. These funds are entirely yours to put towards parallel marketing, events, promotional material or production contribution.

SELECTION PROCESS

In parallel to proposing specific works and authors for 3D-audiobook production, tangiblemode will also be holding regular open calls for new works.

We look for works across a wide range of fields – works with limited narrative that imply or would benefit from a non-linear listening experience. We are open to works in English, Catalan, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
