tangiblemode brings cutting-edge technology, a sound-first approach and some lively, digital-native design concepts to arts production. What exactly do we build with all that? We provide ARts content (AR* for arts!) to a growing, heterogeneous community around e-learning, language learners, digital humanities, e-publishing, audio-books, voice and script coaching and the emerging genre of academic ‘audio-papers’.

Audio is one of those highly critical, deeply unknown and less seriously treated elements on web and mobile UXs. Its huge cognitive/emotional potential also represents a fascinating, somewhat unexplored land…

Until recent times, a certain technical economy (band-width, file weight, etc.) had been used to justify the so-called “visuals-first” approach on web/mobile and the relegation of sound to subsidiary roles, i.e, its forced drop in quality. However, in the last two years, the explosion of VR/AR/MR has triggered a renewed interest in sound quality – as a primary ‘convincing’ factor when it comes to hyperrealistic, virtual experiences. Consequently, more and more investment is being placed into high-end sound productions at a consumer level. Rather sooner than later, most of the low-res audio-based content (mp3, 2D-audio) will have to be either remastered or just replaced by hi-res content.

In the context of a language learning platform, an ‘audio-first’ approach to e-learning couples audio fidelity (high resolution) with 3D spatial resolution in order to create an utterly new dimension for the learning process.

Well into the second decade of the XXI century, words such as “writing” or “publishing” should suggest a wider range of meanings. By melting obsolete dichotomies between written-word vs spoken-word (turning them into a sort of continuum, a fluent craft), we contribute new possibilities beyond the traditional circles of prestige in publishing.

There are many reasons authors and publishers might consider audiobook versions of their works. On the business side, audiobooks boost both print book and ebook sales. Audiobooks never go out of print. Audiobooks increase presence and discoverability. Audiobooks expand an audience to include non-readers, struggling readers and second-language learners. Audiobooks increase accessibility and appeal to mobile consumers who listen while commuting, exercising, cooking, gardening, driving or many other activities.

A 3D audiobook offers entirely new dimensions of experience for the listener and creative input for the author. When the listener is immersed in a 3D sound space, proximity of the speaking voice and the acoustic qualities of the space become active elements and part of the creative toolkit for realising the emotional and cognitive impact of the work.

Our 3D audiobook production combines physical binaural recording* with Virtual Acoustics in order to reconstruct or simulate any 3D acoustic situation. That involves capturing space signatures, simulating volumetric sound, located sound and spatial sound animation. The audio is mastered as a convenient stereo file (2CH) intended for ear/headphone listening. The final 3D audiobook is released as a mobile App in the book category – delivering a hi-resolution, compelling audio-literary experience.


*Binaural recording involves placing two microphones inside a dummy-head at the ear-drums. Someone listening back on earphones is then wrapped in the same sound scene that the dummy-head ‘experiences’. As in stereoscopic vision, a depth-of-field and height-of-field is created and we feel immersed in a 360º sphere centred around our own ears. Sounds above and below our body are equally possible as well as the full range in the left, right, front and back. We can hear sounds at various distances, azimuths or elevations with respect to our body position.

Inspired by cognitive linguistics, psycho-acoustics and learning theories, we partner with voice and acting coaches in developing customised tools for speaking and acting practice. Adapted to specific script-learning methods, these tools work as digital extensions of the coaching process.

Using cutting-edge 3D-sound on the actor’s script preparation at different levels – from the coach’s instructions (talking to the actor) to the different drills and repetitions involved in the script learning processes (hi-res recording of other actors’ voices) – this approach is especially suitable for boosting methods such as The Meisner Technique, among others.

GROWING A TEXT FROM SCRATCH –almost like a plant, unfolding from a minute seed– texts organically repeat, iterate and orbit throughout themselves. Combined with 3D voice treatment (hi-res, 3D-binaural audio through headphones), where proximity of the speaking voice(s) and the acoustic qualities of the space become active elements, the listener can be fully immersed in the growing text while absorbing both time and space cues.

Indeed, spatial location of words offers a wide range of possibilities for organising time and memory while learning, producing or rehearsing a script.

Pioneered by Danish-based seismograph.org in September 2016, this emerging academic format explores the academic essay in sonic form, pairing performative use and understanding of language with other sonic materials and environments.

Most recently presented at Lund University in Malmo, October 2017, a growing number of artists & researchers in sonic domains are experimenting with the possibilities of this novel format.

Audio papers have the potential to expand an audience beyond just the academic one, increasing an author’s presence and discoverability. Perhaps of most interest to sonic researchers, the audio paper allows authors to present their research in the context of the sonic work itself.
